Welcome to the Tairua Information Centre Website
Tairua is a beach holiday resort on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, close to Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove, near Pauanui and Sailor's Grave. Accommodation, surfing, swimming, kayaking, bush walks, hiking, kite surfing and great fishing are all right here.
The twin peaks of Paku guard the harbour entrance and provide a 360 degree panorama from the Aldermen Islands round to the Pinnacles in the Coromandel Forest Park from the lookout.
Beneath the twin peaks of Paku is a surf beach offering some of the best waves in New Zealand and a protected beach on the harbour side. Tairua is a favourite Kiwi holiday/vacation destination offering other natural attractions close by. It is the gateway to the east coast of NZ and the closest of all east coast towns to the Auckland International Airport a leisurely two hour drive away or about four by bus. All types of quality accommodation including hotels, motels, B&B, homestays and studio apartments. Our backpackers, camping spots, baches and holiday homes cater to all travellers and budgets.
Hire a kayak, take a fishing charter, dive on reefs, wrecks and off-shore islands or surfcast off the beach. Escape from it all to Slipper Island, one of New Zealand's few privately owned islands, only a short boat trip out from Tairua harbour. The island offers a lodge, chalets and good camping facilities.
Tairua is only minutes away from bush and kauri grove walks, old mines and caves to explore and fresh water swimming holes. Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach, Hahei, and Sailors Grave are all short drives away and Pauanui is only a short ferry ride across the harbour.
You can also explore historical Tairua by walking the History Trail. Download the trail map here.
